Traditional Learning vs Digital Learning

Traditional Learning vs Digital Learning

Choosing the sort of schooling you require can be a difficult task. Many changes have occurred in the education sector in recent years, developments that would have been unthinkable in past decades. Nobody could have imagined the advancements that would occur in this industry.

Both traditional and online learning have advantages and disadvantages. Though classroom learning is still chosen as a modality of instruction at many institutions, online learning is gradually overtaking conventional learning in popularity. The interactive digital publishing sector is increasing in tandem with rising demand. Interactivity, accessibility, and convenience provided by online learning make learning more interesting and stimulating. In this blog, we will see the difference between Traditional and Online Learning, benefits and the importance of traditional learning and online learning.

Traditional Learning Vs Digital learning

Traditional Learning

Tradition Learning, Typically it is a face-to-face information exchange that takes place in a physical setting, such as a college campus or school. Classroom education typically consists of an instructor and students and is distinguished by interactive activities, socializing, making lecture notes, getting assignments, and taking tests. Traditional learning is defined as teacher-led or lecture-based learning in which teachers deliver instruction to students.

Traditional learning offers qualitative advantages over online learning, and this advantage is especially important for pre-primary and primary pupil who have short attention span and cannot spend hours in a virtual classroom setting.

 Online Learning

Online learning, often known as "distance learning" or "eLearning," is education that occurs through the Internet. It is an umbrella word for any learning that takes place over distance  rather than not in a traditional classroom.

Online education is the process of acquiring skills and information using electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, laptop computers, and so on that connect to the internet. Tutors or mentors can reach out to all students more efficiently and teach them the required skills through online education. Students who are unable to attend traditional classes regularly can now learn from anywhere going digital.

Statistics on Traditional Learning Vs Online Learning

Covid -19 has affected all the sectors of livelihood. All the malls, supermarkets, office sector and even the education system had to shut down due to the lockdown. Students were unable to attend a traditional classroom, which had a severe influence on their academic performance. As a result, the Indian educational authorities decided to set up online classes for students so that their studies may continue. During this period, the importance of online education became apparent. And here is when the debate over "Traditional Learning vs. Digital Learning" began. Let's see the difference using stats.

  • When compared to traditional learning retention rates of 8% to 10%, eLearning enhances learning retention rates by 25% to 60%.
  • Individual learning speed at 95% and less travel are the most important motivators for employees to select online education over traditional classroom-based learning 84%.
  • When compared to traditional face-to-face classes, 85% of learners think the online learning experience was better, or at least equally satisfying.
  • Nearly 70% of educators believe that online learning is just better than traditional learning.
  • And almost 70% of the students have argued that the online instructions are far better than in a traditional classroom.
  • Even post-pandemic, almost 73% of the students prefer some courses to be fully online.
  • Did you know? According to a study conducted by Open University in the United Kingdom, online classes consume 90% less energy and release 85% less CO2 per student than in traditional in- person courses, referring to online learning as not only effective for students but also for the environment.

Though there are stats explaining that online learning is better than traditional learning, here are a few advantages and disadvantages to consider.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traditional Learning

Advantages:

  • Interaction:

One-in-person instruction is successful and results in “improved student-teacher and student-student interaction”.

  • Hands-on Learning:

Because students are present, traditional learning provides a “sense of security and control” over their learning.

  • Experience of campus life:

Campus life helps the students interact with each other and the environments “encourage student engagement” and offer a suitable setting for other students to study.

  • Competitiveness:

Traditional learning promotes “more competitiveness” among students. And a conventional school's social setting is ideal for forming a child's character and individuality.

Disadvantages:

  • Cost:

Traditional Learning is more “expensive” as enrolling in a particular programme will need you to spend more money including on transportation or relocation, meals, materials, and so on.

  • Flexibility:

Unfortunately, if you are simultaneously working while learning, in-person or traditional programmes provide almost “no flexibility” in terms of attending classes.

  • Time:

When it comes to traditional learning, physically attending classes is a must and this will use “more of your time” than online programmes. This includes getting ready for class and potentially commuting.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning

Advantages:

  • Cost:

The most significant advantage of online learning is its “low cost”. Enrolling in an online programme eliminates the need to go to class every day or even relocate to another state to attend classes. By avoiding travel and relocation costs, you instantly save a lot of money on meals, books, and school supplies.

  • Time:

Given the lack of a commute, this is a consideration. By just turning on your computer and enrolling in an online class, “you save the time” it would take to get dressed and physically attend class.

  • Technology:

Attending online classes exposes you to “more technology”, causing you to become more tech-savvy.

  • Interaction:

Although it may appear to be paradoxical, online learning may be beneficial for enhancing class interaction. Even students who are often shy in regular courses can easily engage in an online session.

Disadvantages:

  • Discipline:

Online Learning can affect a student's discipline. Remote learning might be unproductive for students who “lack self-discipline” and seek frequent assistance from their teachers.

  • Isolation:

Online classes, while beneficial for more introverted individuals, can create a “sense of isolation for (extroverts)” those who flourish by physically connecting with their classmates.

  • Technical issues:

The biggest disadvantage of online learning is “facing technical problems”. There are further instances in which anything may go wrong owing to technical issues such as loss of audio, video, or general connectivity.

Education is the process of facilitating learning skills, values, beliefs, habits and also equipping one with knowledge. When it comes to selecting the path of learning either online learning or traditional learning, both have their own importance, advantages and disadvantages to explain when it comes to deciding which is better for a student. It is always a student who needs to choose the form of learning (online, traditional, or a combination of both learning)  in order to attain their goals.
